The Guyver 2 is clearly a labor of love for the genre on the part of producer/director Steve Wang. Wisely, Wang avoids much of the stupidity of the first Guyver film by taking a more serious approach to the story. I'm honestly surprised he tied this movie to that junk - he might just as well put out his own version of The Guyver and avoided the bad publicity. The story concept is good despite the acting - the fight choreography nails Japanese cinema on the head. There's times where the action is a little cheesy, but there are also times where subtle flourishes really add to the action. In the pre-CG world of 1994, these guys do pretty well for being in rubber suits, and the special effects are well done for a low budget effort. I'm not a big fan of the genre, but I'm still able to give extra star-rating for the effort put forth. I think this is a must-see for anyone who enjoys anime or power rangers-style action.
