Movie Reviews

What a "Hopp'in'good" deal!
Mike McCLUSKEY | Fulda, Germany | 09/02/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This 5-disc compellation saves money-- and space. You can find this title-- elsewhere-- for as much as $50,
or, $15, singularly, as Volumes 1;2;3;4;&5. The Amazon price is the best, by far-- either way.
There's a total of 66 Hoppy features-- and 44 TV shows. Volumes 1-8 are the last forty movies made.
The first 16 are available as double-bills on eight different DVDS-- but NOT at these great prices!
I'm looking forward to the last 44 {from the TV series in the '50s}. Robert Mitchum, Victor Jory, Andy Clyde,
and George "Superman" Reeves show up, often, as various characters.
I've been awaiting Volume #1 [since July], so my recomendation is to by THIS title PLUS Volumes 6-8 to save
some time AND money! The previous double-feature discs are pristine transfers, as well, though more costly.
If you're NOT familiar with Wm Boyd, let me tell you ONE thing:
In the record, books HE's listed as playing ONE-charcter most often at the movies AND on TV.
These action-packed westerns are GREAT entertainment. Best of all, they're able to do it in as short as 59-minutes.
God Bless Americana!"

"This is not a review but in answer to another reviewer's concern about contents: This CASSIDY set includes "Hidden Gold," "Stagecoach War," "The Showdown," "Three Men from Texas," "Doomed Caravan," "Pirates on Horseback," "In Old Colorado," "Riders of the Timberline," "Wide Open Town," "Stick to Your Guns," "Leather Burners," "Undercover Man," "Border Patrol," "False Colors," "Riders of the Deadline," "Colt Comrades," "Forty Thieves," "The Devil's Playground," "Fool's Gold," "Dangerous Venture," "Unexpected Guest," "Borrowed Trouble," "Sinister Journey," "False Paradise," and "The Dead Don't Dream." 26 1/2 hrs. total. Standard; Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1."
Great at A-N-Y price...BUT... hey duplicity strikes again!

"I absolutely LOVE Hopalong Cassidy movies-- all 66-- and cannot wait for the 44 TV-episodes to be released, but I suppose MOST people have never even HEARD of Wm Boyd. This probably makes it hard to sell B&W films to people that just DON'T watch B-"oaters." Heck, I'd guess MOST people think I just wrote a line about BOATS!
Anyway, while THIS title IS worth the money, it's "JUST" the first 4-discs of the eight disc total that's the first 4 of the previous 5-disc compelation. Confused? As soon as the 5-disc set goes out-of-print, a second compelation'll come out so the TWO 4-disc sets will be the entire EIGHT disc set! They're CHEAP enough... DO
remember-- unless you want to pay $15, elsewhere for Volume 1, you'll have to get the first four in the newest collection; or the first 5 in the older one.
Probably makes MORE sense to buy the last four individually which you'll eventually replace with the SECOND 4-disc release. Confused? Just THANK me for you're NOT having all the Hoppys I have... I'll pass 'em on to friends and make some converts! Here's what I'm TRYIN' to say:
Volume 1-- 5 movies--currently Out-of-print: available TWICE below:
Volume 2-- 5 Movies
Volume 3-- 5 Movies
Volume 4-- 5 Movies-- $7 each or 4 for $23
Volume 5-- 5 Movies-- " " " " 5 for $32-- SOON on third Set(?)
Volume 6-- 5 Movies-- Seperately, only. AND SOON on third Set(?)
Volume 7-- 5 Movies-- " " " " SOON on third Set(?)
Volume 8-- 5 Movies-- " " " " SOON on third Set(?)

The OTHER 16 Hopalong Cassidy movies are available on more costly-- though WORTH it double-bills, or should I say Double- "Bill[Wm Boyd]s"?"
Hoppy Plus California Equals Brilliant!
FLAtRich | USA | 04/10/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"My love of Westerns started with Hoppy movies released to TV in the late 1940s. The fact is that William Boyd was among the first film producers to recognize television as an entity unto itself and not necessarily the death knell of motion pictures. I don't know if he owned all of his feature films by that time, but he did eventually, and he released many of the 25 featured in this collection to TV.

But you won't find any of them playing on your box now or anywhere else in the condition of the prints represented here. They are almost pristine and nearly perfect and certainly struck from carefully preserved negatives. It is such a joy to watch these films again, some fifty years after first seeing them, and especially in better shape than the first time around.

Hoppy is, of course, the ultimate hero to me, but he is almost eclipsed in this collection by his sidekick California Carlson (Andy Clyde.) Clyde is so funny in some of these films that I had a hard time not watching more than one in one sitting just to see what kind of trouble California would get into next.

Hoppy had other sidekicks over the years, including Gabby Hayes, but California strikes gold with me and that makes this particular collection of 25 Hoppy films a terrific gift for old timers who barely remember the man on the white horse (Topper) and also a perfect starting point for buckaroos just starting down the trail with Hopalong Cassidy!
