Could be described as a light-weight, comedic channeling of Poltergeist (missing child trapped in another dimension), William Katt and George Wendt carry this movie well. By today's standards, the film would probably be considered a bit slow in the beginning and subject to cheap-looking special effects, but consider what makes this film different: 1) a capable protagonist with military skills, 2) unwitting sidekick (in George Wendt) that almost steals the whole show, and 3) protagonist choices that make sense in their own way - sure he does stupid stuff, but at other times he does exactly what WE would do in the same situation (like get five video cameras and try to catch something on film, carry a shotgun everywhere you go, etc). As someone who saw this in the theatre back in 86, it was a good time with a lot of audience involvement and stunned reactions to things that are now commonplace in movies. Unlike some other great comedic horror films, this one relies less on gore, and so might be more fun for those who are squeamish.
