Movie Reviews

Duke in the 1930s
Annie Van Auken | Planet Earth | 07/06/2007
(4 out of 5 stars)

"JOHN WAYNE - COWBOY LEGEND presents a nice sampling of 1930s 'B' westerns. All but one of these selections ("McLintock!") are early-career Wayne 3-reelers. Their plots were reliably formulaic, and the cast of regulars included Gabby Hayes, Yakima Canutt and several now nearly-forgotten leading ladies. The most recent of Duke's offerings here, HELL TOWN was filmed two years before his first western masterpiece, STAGECOACH. Signs of Wayne's future greatness were everywhere by then.

Another highly recommended DVD set is the ULTIMATE JOHN WAYNE COLLECTION. All ten of these movies are included, as well as ten more plus a bonus documentary, THE AMERICAN WEST OF JOHN FORD.

"Brought this movie pack and the other John Wayne Hero Movie Pack for my elder aunts and uncle and my mother....they just enjoy watching John Wayne in his westerns and they hadn't seen these in a long time...In this movie pack, nine of the movies are in B&W, almost an hour long each, and from the 1930's and the 10th movie (McLintock) is in color, from the 1960's, and just over 2 hours long....we put these on to play when is nothing else that they can find to watch on TV, since TV is their primry source of entertainment because of their inability to move around...I would recommend this movie pack and the other movie pack."

"While the price was OK for this product, it has 9 black & white short movies (all under an hour) and one full-length colored movie that was over an hour (McClintock). I was expecting copies either made from originals or digital copies; however, the quality was very poor. The quality looked like VCR copies that had been burned onto a DVD on a home machine, there was no clean-up - I can only stress the poor quality of the video itself."
