Journey to the Center of the Earth - Treat Williams shined in this!

Mysterious Island - Not great but a good two-part story with many stars you know!

If you want to waste a few hours watching seriocomic "reimagined" versions of these classic stories, you could do worse (I suppose) than these two movies. They're pleasant enough, but nothing to write home about, and the only thing they have in common with the novels (beyond the titles) are the general plots. On the other hand, if you want serious treatments of these works, skip this lightweight pabulum and buy the original 1959 (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and 1961 (Mysterious Island) movies. The originals take liberties with the stories from the novels too (although much less so than these remakes), and the special effects in movies that old obviously are primitive by modern standards; yet the more than 50-year-old originals are far, far better movies and are much closer to the novels.

Double Fun!

"OK, so I know these are not the quality of the originals by any stretch. BUT - - - If every re-telling of the same story is identicle, how boring would that be? There are quite a few liberties taken here (especially Journey) but they are fun for the whole family to watch, with little violence and bloodshed. (Hard to find these days!) And I thought that Mysterious Island was worth the price of the two movies alone! Parick Stewert does a great job in his role, despite the literary licenses taken! But if you're looking for the Verne movies, watch the earlier versions(1959 - Journey & 1961 - Island)!"
Double Feature!!!

(3 out of 5 stars)

"The two DVDs in this combo pack really belong together. Both "Journey to the Center of the Earth" and "Mysterious Island" are Hallmark family-style adventures based (more or less) on Jules Verne novels. Both were done as two-part mini-series, so you're getting six hours of viewing, all told. Both feature mildly violent, bloodless action; call them PG-level. Both boast generous portions of extra cheesy computer graphics that you will either love or hate. And they're both rather silly. But if you don't mind that you'll get a real bargain with this package. For the bargain-hunter gold medal, scan the clearance bins at your friendly neighborhood discount store. I found this one for $5!!! That's what I call a blue light special!"
