Movie Reviews

Suprise...Good quality from Madacy!
William D. Ferry | Lake Hopatcong, NJ | 03/15/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Low-end labels like Madacy usually get panned (and perhaps deservedly so) for releasing low-quality copies of public domain features. This is a happy exception to the rule.

This set is actually comprised of five volumes of the SLAPHAPPY COLLECTION; the complete set is also available on Amazon.com. Each disc contains three 30-minute programs. Here's how the Kings of Comedy set relates to the SLAPHAPPY COLLECTION:

Disc 1 (AKA SlapHappy Vol. 5)
Funshops, Buster Keaton, Dynamite Teams

Disc 2 (AKA SlapHappy Vol. 7)
Keystone Studios, Great Gags 2, Family Fun

Disc 3 (AKA SlapHappy Vol. 8)
Surreal Comedy, Charlie Chaplin, Getting the Girl

Disc 4 (AKA SlapHappy Vol. 9)
Our Gang, Comedy Directors, Hollywood Spoofs

Disc 5 (AKA SlapHappy Vol. 10)
Stan and Ollie, Battling Clowns, Comediennes

Print quality varies, but I think effort has been made to make the source materials as presentable as possible. An added bonus is a background score of modern-day recreations of 20's dance band music. The narration is unobtrusive, but comes on an alternate track, so just the music can be heard - another bonus.

This set comes in a nice embossed tin with a 32-page booklet featuring bios of some of the leading performers. Discs are held with plastic backing in a fold-out cardboard booklet (which lists all the clips included on each program/disc).

My only caveat is that the films are presented in clip or "highlights" format, much like the Robert Youngson compilation films (WHEN COMEDY WAS KING, 30 YEARS OF FUN, etc). This is beneficial to the novice viewer, as you get enough footage in each program to be enjoyable without wearing you out. However, silent comedy fans like me would also enjoy the films in their entirety.

It's worth noting that producers Paul Lisy, Larry Stefan, & Chris Mohr have enlisted the aid of Richard M. Roberts. He's familiar to CLASSIC IMAGES readers as a true authority on silent comedy.

If you don't want to invest in the entire SLAPHAPPY COLLECTION, KINGS OF COMEDY is a very worthwhile alternative.
