Movie Reviews

Excellent!!!
S. Castellano | Scranton, PA United States | 09/24/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As mentioned before in my earlier reviews, Marvin's concert DVDs are true treasures for me as I was very young when he was murdered by his father in 1984. This one is NO exception! Many thanks to the folks at Universal and Reelin' in the Years for yet another exceptional DVD!

This DVD was the bonus to the overseas release of THE REAL THING IN PERFORMANCE 1964-1981. I guess the folks at Universal and Reelin' heard our cries here in America and decided to release this great footage!

This concert was taped in Ostende, Belgium on 4 July 1981 and it shows Marvin at his very best doing what he is remembered for most! His band was super tight and Marvin looks truly amazing!

You can tell by the video how dated it is, but the picture is still clear and the audio is truly amazing!

Includes the 1981 Belgium concert, which includes the songs:

GOT TO GIVE IT UP
COME GET TO THIS
LET'S GET IT ON (including the famous "turn the lights off" rap)
AFTER THE DANCE
IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE
AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING
AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH
HOW SWEET IT IS (TO BE LOVED BY YOU)
I WANT YOU
INNER CITY BLUES (MAKE ME WANNA HOLLER)

Also includes his appearance on the Belguim television show FOLLLIES 7 May 1981:

I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE (lip-synching to the 1968 hit)
INTERVIEW
HEAVY LOVE AFFAIR (lip-synch, from the 1981 album IN OUR LIFETIME)

Bonus features include:

Original vocal track (a capella) for I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE
Excellent booklet filled with photos and liner notes by Rob Bowman

Truly over the top! A must have to any Motown or Marvin Gaye fan!"
Like being at a concert!

"I bought this as a Christmas gift for my sixty-seven year old Auntie. She couldn't thank me enough. She and her friends put it on a big-screen television and danced the night away. Auntie told me that the DVD was so good that she felt like she was live in Belguim watching the man himself live and in person. My Auntie was happy; the price was reasonable so for me this was a great purchase."

"I gave this four stars because two of my favorites are not on here. "Distant Lover" and "What's Going On". I didn't know Marvin could dance so well. If you are a fan, or thinking of becoming a fan, or just checking it out. This is Marvin Gaye in front of his audience, doing his ever loving THING. You'll love the a cappella version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine". There are no big production numbers, lasers, fog or other gimmicks. It's just Marvin Gaye, his audience, and you. Get it, you'll be glad you did."
