Movie Reviews

Will have an appeal for some.

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This oratorio is not without merit, but a single viewing may well be sufficient for most people. Scored for orchestra, chorus and two soloists, the music will appeal to those, of whom I am one, who enjoy the work of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, although to me it lacks their inventiveness for an extended piece. Visually, I found Paradiso interesting in parts, but often repeated images made Eternity tedious rather than richly deep. Some viewers may be distracted by a bar, which apprears near the bottom of the screen showing the performers and splits the images. I purchased this DVD because I teach courses in Dante and do what I can to enhance classes with items beyond the texts. Dantists may not be disturbed by astronauts, but Beatrice in the Garden of Lust in Paradiso is a violation of her character and a misplacement in the Commedia. All right for this oratorio, perhaps, but not to be confused with the work of Dante. The same can be said for the sequence of Chet Baker on drugs. The disc is formated on side 1 for PAL and on side 2 for NTSC. The 38 page booklet contains notes and libretto in English, German and French.
