Movie Reviews

Basketball Genius
Gareth Doe | London, UK | 07/09/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Even if you only have a passing interest in basketball, the characters in Slam Dunk will have you eagerly waiting to see whats next. It has a wonderful balance of comedy, fights, romance (usually failed) and of course basketball (although there's not much of that in this first volume there is a LOT to come). Basing a manga and then anime on basketball was a brilliant idea and Sakaragi may only be a self proclaimed basketball genius but this show really is genius.

In fact the only bad thing I can say about this series is nothing to do with the series itself but the lacklustre release of it. If this DVD release had proper subtitles and not subtitles for the hard of hearing it would be my favourite release of all time (The Japanese voices are far superior in range of expressions) but there is nothing more annoying than seeing the word panting appear on screen every time someone runs or growls whenever they growl."

5) A gutless afternoon

Slam Dunk is a popular basketball comedy anime series based on manga by Takehiko Inoue. This immensely popular show began airing in Japan on October 16, 1993 and continued running until March 26, 1996. The show consists of 101 episodes and inspired 4 OVA's and 1 movie. The story begins with a juvenile delinquent, a red head named Hanamichi Sakuragi who enters Shohoku high school still in pain over having been dumped by over fifty girls. The last girl to dump Hanamichi was a girl named Yoko who dumped him since she had feelings for a basketball player named Oda. As a result of having been dumped by Yoko, Hanamichi develops a hatred for anything and everything about basketball.

Hanamichi's luck appears to change when he meets a freshmen girl named Haruko Akagi. Haruko is a girl who loves basketball and mistakes Hanamichi for a basketball player due to his height and a physique. Instantly Hanamichi falls for Haruko and in an effort to impress her he embarks on a special training program to become a basketball player.

Just when things were looking up for Hanamichi the situation begins to get complicated when he manages to end up training in the wrong place at the wrong time and ends up being challenged to a fight by a couple of seniors. He also learns that Haruko has a huge crush on an ace, freshmen basketball player named Kaede Rukawa. To make matters even worse Hanamichi manages to upset the captain of Shohoku's basketball team Takenori Akagi who just happens to be Haruko's older brother.

This show is one of the funniest anime programs I've seen in a very long time and I don't think that most anime comedies are very funny (PeaceMaker, the Adventures of Kotetsu, and Ranma 1/2 come to mind). Most of the humor in Slam Dunk stems from Hanamichi's naivety and the situations he manages to get himself into. Even though this is an older show the character designs are pretty original and look good. Also with the way the show is structured you don't have to like basketball or know anything about the sport to enjoy the show. If you like too laugh, the high school genre, romance stories, a good story, or cute guys then you will enjoy this series.

"Sakuragi Hanamichi, a strong and bad-tempered gangster, has entered Shohoku high school along with his four pals. Even though he was some what handsome, because of his reputation, he had been dumped fifty girls (how stupid of them)! With his heart brokenm this five-member gang seemed to be coming to an end. Then, Sakuragi met Haruko, who is a cute girl and is very interested in Basketball. Suddenly, his sadness goes away and he joins the team."
