Movie Reviews

A shining specimen of great low-budget filmic art ...
White Zombie | Coatesville, IN 46121 United States | 01/17/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The blurb on the back claims this film is about "Schlarb, OH, a town overrun with misfits, freaks and weirdos." It may be because I am a misfit, a freak, and a weirdo that leads me to the conclusion that the "Townies" in this film are a better representation of the human race than the so-called "normal" characters. Caduceus, one of the many Townies, is by far the coolest character in the film as he becomes fed up with being treated as an inferior and sets out to teach the "normal" people a lesson they won't soon forget.
I gave this film two good viewings. The first time I watched this movie I liked it all right; but I was severely disappointed at the seeming lack of an ending. I found the film very entertaining on the whole. For a "Micro-budget" production it was very well done. The script was good, the acting was surprisingly good considering the parts were played mainly by friends of the filmmaker, and the direction and editing were spot on. After my first viewing, I decided this was definitely a film I would like to see again. After the second viewing I came to the realization that this movie is truly a great work of filmic art. Several lines from this movie were immediately added to my mental arsenal of movie quotes I keep on the ready, and I think they will stay there for quite some time. Also after the second viewing, the seeming lack of an ending didn't bother me so much. In fact, I realized that the ending is pretty freakin' climactic, and probably disturbing to normal folk. This movie is an instant classic, and has landed itself a spot on my list of greatest films ever produced. Just what spot I'm not yet sure . . . that just might require a third viewing.

Love Dat Squirrel!!

"In my mind, the dream sequence in Townies, the one with the happy-go-lucky, domesticated squirrel, is one of the greatest moments in cinema. But don't take my word for it, I'm not normal. I don't fit in. Then again, maybe that's why I love this movie so much. It's a celluloid love letter to freaks, misfits, goofballs, psychos, shut-ins, geeks and weirdoes everywhere. Thank you Wayne Alan Harold! Those of us with hands salute you."
