I saw this film back in the early 90s and it didn't really make an impact. When I found out that Wenders had the 'real' director's version of the film, I decided to give it another try. This is definitely the version to see and the fact that the 90s original had to be cut down is the entire reason it flopped at the box office. Another stupid move by Hollywood, as usual. I wouldn't say this movie is the 'ultimate road movie' as it is sometimes called. True, the filming takes place in a lot of different locations, but the second half is entirely in the Australian Outback. The story is interesting, but as one might expect from Wenders, the value of the film is in its deeper meaning and what it says about technology and humanity. It's amazing that he could predict "social media addiction" decades before it began to happen - the film shows how self-destructive it can be to focus one's life on the viewing of fanciful images of oneself.
