Good footage for both novice and expert and good intro for b

(4 out of 5 stars)

"This DVD contains 16mmn film footage primarily from German newsreels made during the second world war. The footage is quite good in that every major fighter is covered from a variety of aspects. This includes footage from nearly all fronts as well as the aircraft in a variety of roles (not just fighter) from a variety of angles (from ground, cockpit views, etc.). This footage should prove interesting not only to the novice but also to those with a good degree of knowledge of the aircraft.

The film not only presents decent film footage but also provides, in a very dull British monotone voice, a good analysis and oveview of the history and development of the aircraft during this period, strengths and weaknesses and a wide assortment of other facts. To those with a good degree of knowledge of these aircraft the analysis will not provide anything new but for the novice the DVD provides a good and succinct introduction to its topic. The video does a good job at describing the major factors contributing the eventual collapse of the Luftwaffe (i.e., overwhelming resources against it, poor administration of Luftwaffe, attition of pilots and deterioration in recruits and their training, etc.). All and all, analysis in this DVD is far superior to anything one would find on History or Discovery Channel documenataries."
