Here is a visually lush production of life in the court of King Henry. I know we all like to think we'd be in such high clover if we could be lords and ladies of the manor. Here is a sober reminder that it isn't pretty at all. It's about as cut throat as it gets. Well, you know it's not far removed from rarefied and lofty places among the wealthy today. If you've lived a life of modest means, and feel 'shot at and hit', I wouldn't lament your station in life. It's never as glamorous as it may seem at "the top".
We are all fine right where we are. Yes, the "lot in life" for women of that day was pretty deplorable. But it was even worse for the rest of society living in squalor and devoid of human rights, or dignity. For every handful of lords, ladies, and their spoiled rotten kids, there had to be scores and scores of peasants to serve them...and never speak unless spoken to, and always avert your eyes "sire". You could be made pregnant by the spoiled brat, and then sent to the fetid , stinking streets of London to try to survive. It's all nice and fine to see a visually lush movie like this. In truth, for me, the end of a movie like these, is a bit like "how good it feels when you stop beating your head against the wall". I suppose I live in some kind of dream world...but I'm not sure why I plunge myself in this kind of profound disappointment in my fellow man, only then to try to struggle out of my melancholy.

The copy I received was damaged, but I've purchased a used copy on my own. I love this movie. If you've watched "The Tudors" you know the story line. There are a bunch of versions of this movie and the story. This has been acted by a plethora of well know actors. This one has a powerhouse of great actors. The scenery, costumes, and the unfolding of what happens will surprise you. It's exceptionally well put together. I highly recommend you get this movie. I'm keeping my copy in my movie library. Whenever there is a copy available to Swap ...Get It !!! you'll be glad you did.

I loved this movie -- romance, intrigue and history with attractive actors. There are many interesting special features on the DVD, too. I was so moved by the movie that I finally read the book which had been on my shelf for a couple years. The movie is quite different from the book, not just a shortened version of the book. Both are great. Sorry, I loved them both so much that I'm not going to offer them on PBS or Swap-a-DVD.
