The Forest is either a typical horror film where you are constantly saying, “Don’t do that, you fool!” or a clever psychological movie. It depends on whether you watch the movie first or the commentary by the director. If you are not familiar with Japan’s beautiful forest at the foot of Mt. Fuji where people for over a hundred years have gone to commit suicide, you may check the internet; search “Aokigahara Forest,” but there is probably adequate background in the movie. To make it more interesting, the tradition in Japan is that the dead people have to stay in the forest, but become angry yūrei, or basically, ghosts. The movie is also another tale of identical twins. The more passive twin, Sara, in the US is contacted by the Japanese police that her sister, Jess, teaching in Japan, has died. Since she feels that Jess is still alive Sara convinces her husband to let her go and find her. In a strange country with no knowledge of Japanese, she sets out and soon attaches herself to a handsome man, Aiden, who had approached her in a bar. Of course, this person might or might not be trustworthy. Then they find a Forest guide, Michi. Finally, the movie presents someone to like. The occasional jump-scares are cheap and unnecessary. If you view the movie assuming that many of Sara’s bad choices are supposed to be made by the Forest, not her, you will enjoy it a lot more.

I could not really get into this but the very ending was worth watching if a horror fan. That said, watch some, use the 120X FF until the last 15 or 20 minutes and you will save alot of your time for horror movies worthy of watching all the way through like Evil Dead.
