The Sutherlands are emotive actors (if not a bit typecast), and the two share some magical father-son relationship moments in this 'throwback' western. I'll describe it as throwback because the plot is extremely cliched and follows the exact template of innumerable other westerns like it. The build-up to the actual 'gunfighter-picks-up-his-guns' scene consumes the entire length of the movie, and the finality of it is not particularly worth the wait. As an action western, Forsaken falls short - it's better viewed through the prism of familial tensions, old loves lost, and the 'loneliness' of the gunfighter lifestyle. To that extent Kiefer's character reminds me a lot of Jack Bauer in 24's later seasons. I'm not sure that a study in lonely gunfighters makes for entertainment, but it is thought-provoking. I believe the movie was trying to make a statement about faith as well (Donald is a preacher), but I'm not sure what that statement was supposed to be (positive or negative) as it seemed lost in the violent end of the movie.

I love a good western and this one is well done. An all-star cast that makes it seem real. It has something for everyone.

I thought this was great with Kiefer Sutherland, Demi Moore, Donald Sutherland and Doc Holiday really shining in this! Great plotline and a must if you are a fan of any of these actors or actresses!
