A blackguard lawyer receives a wreath of funeral lilies. Attached to the disconcerting bouquet is a note from a fiend called The Ringer that promises to murder him in two day’s time. His nervous butler calls the Yard, which sends a stolid inspector and his Scot sidekick, a mordant doctor given to getting off nifties at others’ expense. They spring from the joint a Cockney crook who can identify The Ringer, a master of disguise. The doctor and the crook provide a lot of comic relief with genuinely funny lines but the whole script is well-written, with clearly differentiated characters who all have distinctive voices. The pace is brisk. Faithfully based on a Edgar Wallace story, there are no holes in the script. A viewer can tell everybody involved in making this movie intended to do a good job, low budget be damned.
