The End of The Road in More Ways Than One
Ronald Chase Sf Film | San Francisco, CA USA | 12/31/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Well, what did I expect? After the almost 40 hours I've invested in HEIMAT 1 & 2, the only reward that would invigorate me is utter brilliance. Of, course, I'm disappointed. That pedestrian meeting of the two thwarted lovers that opens it; too many scenes that play like sit-com,and also the theme---
our lovers decide to restore a house next to their roots, and to entertain their friends there. Are you already asleep? Here, you can thank the auxiliary characters for pulling the films along--the East German workers who come to rebuild the house, the quarreling Russians, etc. Alas, the family spats and misunderstandings seem much too familiar--they've been covered in countless mediocre films. Only FOLLOW ME echoes the power and glory of the former series, as it concerns the story of a Bosnian teenager and possible heir. Everything else meanders on to its less than inspired conclusion. One of the biggest disappointments was its loss of visual integrity--so much of the footage looked like "business as usual". I got to the end of the road, but both my energy and the film's were left behind in the dust."
ExcellentVery realistic documentation

"Very realistic documentation about the years in Germany from 1989 to the year 2000. For me personally it was especially interesting to watch, because I have lived in the Hunsrueck area and the series has brought back many memories. The translation (subtitles) is not very good, but I did not have to worry about it, because I followed the German language."
