It's assumed that the viewer can accept the desire to be a Mountain Man as rational - the film makes no attempt to provide justification for this choice, but in 1972 I think this 'living with nature' concept was much more prevalent than it is today. If you can get past this hurdle, then Jeremiah Johnson is an entertaining epic that falls into the off-beat Western category. Co-writer John Milius shows flashes of what would make Conan the Barbarian the epic that it became. Redford seems a little wooden in the beginning, but I sense this was Sydney Pollack's fault rather than his. I'd have preferred another actor than Redford be cast in the role, but the majority of the film takes place on his land near Sundance Utah, so he literally 'goes with the territory'. Overall, an enjoyable action film in the fantasy-western legend tradition, but also stands apart in its downbeat feel and mood. Certainly not the typical Hollywood Ending characteristic of so many other Western films.

The photography, the story, the actors -- everything is great about this picture. Certainly a somewhat sanitized version of mountain life, but still a great movie.

An all-time classic movie, with Robert Redford at the top of his form. Everyone should see this film -- at least once if not more!
