Movie Reviews

Not the best..but...
Crimson Avenger | Cambridge, MA | 01/12/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Any recording of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band deserves notice. However, the funky, dark qualities of Preservation Hall were destroyed by video lighting. Inconsistant editing and intrusive interviews...(let them play, guys! It's all we need to know!) spoiled what is otherwise a musically satisfying performance..."

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a wonderful video that captures the spirit of PHJB, created with the quality you expect from PBS. The interviews with the players are a refreshing break from constant music and very informative. I don't know what the other reviewer was talking about... as a soloist plays he is given a close-up and they all seem to be equally covered. "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" is definitely on there. A real toe-tapping, uplifting video."
