Our story begins with an animated opening that introduces the viewer to READ-ALEE-DEED-ALEE (READ) and explains that he is on a journey to a land where people love to read. We find READ at home with his friends RADIOLA, BELLE, and TOC singing about the pleasures of being home. They describe many different kinds of homes, ie. homes in the city, bees in a hive, snails in a shell, a bear in a cave. When they finish singing, READ heads off to see Mr. Booker, who runs a newsstand. XTRA, appears and tells READ about a movie he'd like to see. READ heads for the theater. The movie is entitled "The Hot Dot". In it, an illustrated story is told using these words. Next, READ flies off to the Reading Room to join a group of children who have gathered to hear a story from the books, The Hot Spot and Bit by Bit. The books feature the sound-spelling patterns "ot" and "it". After the book is over, READ heads home. Along the way, he encounters signs "in the real world" which he is able to read, for example, "parking lot", "banana split" and "lost cat.
