Im usually a sucker for superhero movies. These usually have to be pretty bad to get me not to like them. But even after a second watching I have to say I do not like Thor. Where to start. How about on Asgard, Thors home world. Without getting into technicalities, it looks fake. Its almost like they didn't care if it looked good. Its just hard to believe that's the best they could do. How about the Ice Giants? Boring and generic as the enemies of Asgard. How about the cliché ridden plot of the pompous young Thor being stripped of his powers and then having to become "worthy" to get his powers back ( which incidentally produces the only real moment of energy in the movie courtesy of Anthony Hopkins verbal chastisement of Thor as he strips him of said powers), and Loki his brother with a possibly even more overused plotline, the less loved younger brother fueled by jealousy. They give Thor generic carboard cutout friends and a totally unbelievable love interest on Earth courtesy of Natalie Portman. (She falls in love with why exactly? Because he kisses her hand? Oh PLEASE!) The action sequences are boring and the plot is rife with even more clichés than the 2 already listed. On the plus side I do like Chris Hemsworth in the title role. He seems to be the only one to rise above his material. Even Anthony Hopkins, who, other than the scene described above, seems to be in check cashing mode. Without a doubt, the weakest of the Marvel/ Avenger movies.(Well, ok, maybe Iron Man 2 is worse)

I really enjoyed the movie. If you like super hero movies, then you will like Thor. Lots of actions and good effects.

Not your average superhero movie, Thor is a really good movie with very good acting, for the most part, although I found Natalie Portman uncharacteristically bland. The story has a few holes, but flows smoothly, depicting the father, Odin, trying to groom his sons Thor and Loki to be a good ruler, and the strain when Loki finds out a family secret that causes him to turn against Thor.

I am not a comic book fan, and went to see this movie with my husband who grew up with Marvel, so I didn't expect much from this stroll into mythology, but I was very pleasantly surprised by Chris Hemsworth's acting, and I am definitely looking forward to seeing him in the Avengers movie coming out in May of 2012.
