MabelliniImmediately following Rossini?s death in 1868, Verdi wrote to the publisher Ricordi, "To honor Rossini?s memory, I would very much like the best composers in Italy to write a requiem mass, which should be performed on the anniversary of Rossini?s death."Verdi?s noble plan required each of the chosen composers to contribute a movement free of charge. It was then to be performed on the anniversary of Rossini?s death in the church of San Petronio in Bologna, generally deemed to be Rossini?s musical home. All was prepared for performance but at the last moment the local impresario refused to co-operate, the project was abandoned and the music remained in the vaults of the Casa Ricordi until 1986 when David Rosen, undertaking extensive research into the works of Verdi, discovered that the Messa per Rossini was not lost as had been thought. In co-operation with the publishers, G Ricordi & Co, the Verdi Institute in Parma and the International Bach Academy in Stuttgart, the work was recreated and the public world premiere held in September 1988 as the closing performance at the European Music Festival in Stuttgart, conducted by Professor Helmuth Rilling.IN SEARCH OF THE MESSA PER ROSSINI
