Synopsis

The first of two sequels to The Magnificent Seven (1960), this bloody western featured only Yul Brynner from the original picture's all-star cast. Once again, the residents of a pastoral Mexican village become enslaved by a maniacal brute, this time the insane rancher Lorca (Emilio Fernandez), who has corralled a small army of 50 gunmen to intimidate the citizenry into building a church in memory of his son. Chico (now played by Julian Mateos), an original member of the seven gunslingers from the first film, hears of the villagers' plight and sends for Chris Adams (Brynner), who rounds up another lucky seven shootists from various places of ill-repute (including prison). The new bunch, which now includes Warren Oates and Claude Akins, storms the storm, intending to restore order. This film was, in turn, followed by a pair of further sequels, Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) and The Magnificent Seven Ride! (1972). ~ Karl Williams, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review

It took six years before the sequel to one of the most famous Westerns of all time finally made it to the screen. In that time, a lot of changes had occurred in the Western genre, namely the arrival of Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy and the influx of lesser-known Italian spaghetti Westerns. MGM Home Video's disc of the Return of the Magnificent Seven is a bare-bones affair (only the original theatrical trailer is included) and not nearly as much care has been given to this DVD as was given to its predecessor. The film is available in its proper theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and has been formatted for widescreen TVs. Unfortunately, the print has not been remastered and very little care has been bestowed upon it. There is much grain in the picture and colors (when not looking washed out) are inconsistent and tend to undulate (probably due to poor digital compression). But the English mono soundtrack is even worse, as there are crackles and pops throughout, making for an aggravating experience. Considering that the film has long been viewed as a lackluster sequel, couldn't MGM have offered up a more pristine transfer, with a 5.1 soundtrack to distract from the film's rather lukewarm appeal? Obviously not. The disc is for die-hard Magnificent Seven fans only. ~ Derek Hill, All Movie Guide
