A coming-of-age story about the joys and regrets of growing marijuana on a farm,
Cash Crop stars Dawson's Creek heartthrob
James Van Der Beek. Artisan presents
Cash Crop in 1.33:1 full frame with all the imperfections that come with a standard feature. Colors tend to have a washed-out look, with black levels somewhat off. Grain and dirt are noticeable in some areas of the film, but with the budget and transfer this is to be expected. Audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and is used effectively when there is music playing over the images; otherwise, directional effects are kept to a bare minimum. Overall dialogue, effects, and music by
Lyle Lovett and
Wilco are all evenly mixed. Also included on this disc are optional English and Spanish subtitles, as well as English captions.
Cash Crop does include a bundle of extra features, including an insightful commentary track by director
Stuart Burkin and actor
John Slattery, as well as some biographies and filmographies on the cast and crew, a few deleted scenes, a theatrical trailer, and a photo gallery of images from the film. While the video portion of this disc leaves much to be desired, the audio and supplemental features are certainly above average. ~ Patrick Naugle, All Movie Guide
