DVD Synopsis

Adapted from acclaimed author Richard Matheson's influential novelette of the same name, Constantine director Francis Lawrence's I Am Legend follows the last man on Earth as he struggles to survive while fending off the infected survivors of a devastating vampiric plague. A brilliant scientist who raced to discover a cure for the man-made virus as humanity came crumbling down all around him, Robert Neville (Will Smith) was inexplicably immune to the highly contagious superbug. Now the entire population of New York City -- and perhaps the world -- has been transformed into carnivorous bloodsuckers that fear the light and live solely to spread their contagion to any remaining living creature that crosses their path. It's been three years since civilization came to an end, and the loneliness has taken a devastating toll on Neville. By day he scours the city for food and supplies while sending out desperate radio messages in hopes that someone might respond, and by night he attempts to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus by experimenting with his own blood. But time is running out for Neville as the legions of infected watch his every move from the safety of the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. They, too, long to learn the secret that lurks in Neville's blood, though they will have to take caution while attempting to procure it because Neville will sooner die attempting to slay every last one of them than willingly giving up a single drop. Previously adapted for the screen in the 1964 Vincent Price frightener The Last Man on Earth and the 1971 Charlton Heston action film The Omega Man, Matheson's novelette also served as the inspiration for George A. Romero's groundbreaking zombie classic Night of the Living Dead. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

Director Francis Lawrence's I Am Legend arrives on DVD in a handsomely packaged yet curiously lacking two-disc special edition courtesy of Warner Home Video . Presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, the picture is near flawless and the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack makes excellent use of the film's inventive sound scheme -- the sound of the encroaching vampires (courtesy of vocalist Mike Patton) shifting from speaker to speaker in a manner that's genuinely unsettling. Four visually striking animated shorts originally released to promote the film offer variations on the themes that drive I Am Legend, are decidedly downbeat yet undeniably beautiful to behold. Unfortunately, viewers seeking to learn anything at all about the production will have to have a computer in able to do so, as the "Intense Bonus Material Databank" is only viewable via a DVD-ROM PC Weblink. A director's commentary track would have been a welcome addition given that the filmmakers were forced to re-shoot the ending of the film, but sadly the only additional features other than the animated shorts are trailers for Lost Boys: The Tribe, The Dark Knight, Speed Racer, and a promotional spot for Blu-Ray. The inclusion of an alternate theatrical version is indeed something to be celebrated as the original cut more faithfully conveys the tone and ideas of Richard Matheson's original novella, yet the decision to include it on an extra disc rather than simply branching the original film is a curious one give that there's only a four-minute difference in running time. One can only suspect that a more feature-intensive special edition is being prepared for future release. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

I really enjoyed this movie. It is not necessarily "scary" but it is suspenseful and keeps you on your toes wondering what will happen and what he will do next. I liked the fact also that there was little music. It really added to the "last man on earth" affect. The original ending was much better than the alternate ending(where Neville lives).

I was P.O'd when I got this. I posted my single disc edition on here then ordered this from Amazon for about $6 which ran $9 after shipping. I was prepared for what I thought would be a commentary track and a second disc full of making of featurettes and stuff. Guess what. The second disc is nothing but one of those digital copy disc. This had nothing that the single disc version doesn't have. What a BIG let down. Counting the postage I paid to mail my copy and the price I paid for this I'm out of $11 with no new features to show for my money.

This movie is intense, but that intensity never really goes anywhere. You sit there and breath hard but nothing really BANG! happens.

The only time I jumped was when my brother leaned over and went "BOO!" and grabbed me. So unless you are with a bunch of annoying relatives you won't get a scream out of this movie, although it might raise your blood pressure! :)
