what would I put under search to find any and all tv series? Not the reality shows (found that one, and NOT interested!), but series from the 70s and 80s... etc.

For a specific series you need the exact title; google the series or check on Amazon for the correct spelling and see if that won't pull up a listing here. You can also go to Advanced search under the Search tab to see if that might help you find what you're looking for. Just depends on how much you know about the series you're interested in. I just played a few games with the Advanced search trying to drill through everything to find DVD releases of TV series from 1970 to 1990 and you can't really do it here. I think your best bet is to do your searching outside of the site and the look for selected titles here. Amazon has a search facility that might help. Just put in TV Series and then, after that comes up, go to the left side of the page and pick the decade you'd like to search. Long lists, but I'm sure you knew they would be.
