She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance are my favorite "classic" westerns.

Is Paint Your Wagon a western? :-) Maybe a loving parody... Either way, as someone who doesn't automatically go to either westerns or musicals when looking for a good movie, I still highly recommend it, if only for the giggle factor of hearing Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin (kind of, sort of) sing.

Among modern ones, Appaloosa and the remake of 3:10 to Yuma are really good. I especially appreciate how they tease out the homosocial and homoerotic subtext of most westerns' intense pairings of either two cowboys against the world, or the lawman and the gunslinger locked in battle.

I can't believe no one has mentioned HBO's late, lamented show "Deadwood"! Sure, it requires a greater commitment, but pays it off in spades. And since I'm on the subject of TV westerns, "Justified" is a great contemporary example, based on a short story by Elmore "3:10 to Yuma" Leonard. It doesn't hurt that the lean-and-sexy cowboy hat has officially passed from Sam Elliott to Timothy Olyphant ;-)

Threads like this one remind me how many fantastic French movies of all genres there are! Here are some which haven't been mentioned yet:

The Page Turner (La tourneuse de pages), a quiet, haute-bourgeois story of revenge served ice-cold

Read My Lips (Sur mes levres), a deaf office worker discovers a talent for crime and subterfuge when she hires an ex-con as her assistant

The Apartment (L'appartement), a twisty tale of unrequited love and obsession, remade (HORRIBLY) in English as Wicker Park

The Visitors (Les visiteurs), a hysterically funny tale of a medieval night and his squire who are magically transported to the twentieth century (beware of the inferior French sequel and the even more inferior American remake titled Just Visiting)

The Crimson Rivers (Les rivieres pourpres), a dark, dark, dark murder mystery/thriller

La vie en rose -- Marion Cotillard won a well-deserved Oscar for her portrayal of Edith Piaf

The Princess of Montpensier (La princesse de Montpensier), politics, love and intrigue during the Wars of Religion

I've Loved You So Long (Il y a si longtemps que je t'aime), beautiful drama about a woman adjusting to "real" life after a long prison sentence

Tell No One (Ne le dis a personne), a man tries to discover whether his wife was really murdered eight years earlier while various parties try to stop him

Point Blank (A bout portant), a lean, mean, and breathlessly brief action flic

The Three Colors trilogy -- gorgeous, melancholy stories which straddle the post-Cold War divide and take place in Paris, Poland and Switzerland; the middle story is mostly in Polish, but all three should be seen in order (Blue, White and Red)

Mouth to Mouth (Boca a boca), a funny, silly Spanish comedy with Javier Bardem

Ellipse (Elipsis), a lean and spare crime flic from Venezuela

Open Your Eyes (Abre los ojos), the fantastic basis for the much inferior Vanilla Sky

Miss Bullet (Miss bala), a Mexican wannabe beauty queen lands in the clutches of a vicious gang

I am offering season one of "Deadwood" -- six discs in total, but the first disc sometimes "jams" while playing. Not always and not in every device, but it has happened. Discs two-six play perfectly.

Discs come in a foldable cardboard-and-plastic case, the booklike outer case is missing

I have the boxed set of the first version of The L Word -- it's Chinese, but plays great in a Region 1 player, has English and Chinese on the box and English menus. Watched them a few times, the discs are not scratched, all there. The packaging is slightly different than what you might expect: the DVDs come not in individual box(let)es, but in plastic sleeves (two to a sleeve), which are placed inside a very nice cardboard box (almost like a box for chocolates) with pictures, blurb and episode list printed on it (so no inserts). Even though this edition has 7 discs, I am willing to swap them for 5 credits, since the US 'edition' has 5 discs. Please PM me if interested.
