Help Center - Can I play Blu-ray discs or HD-DVD discs in a DVD player?

Search Terms:

The basic answer is no. DVDs, Blu-rays, and HD-DVDs are all different types of discs that can store varying amounts of data and do not have universal compatibility.

  • BLU-RAY DISCS CAN ONLY BE PLAYED IN BLU-RAY PLAYERS.
    • Some newer computers are Blu-ray compatible, but there will be notification on the box and the disc tray (and in the price tag!).
    • Playstation 3 gaming systems are Blu-ray compatible.
  • HD-DVD DISCS CAN ONLY BE PLAYED IN HD-DVD PLAYERS.
    • Stand alone HD-DVD players are no longer manufactured. HD-DVDs were the competitor of Blu-rays, and Blu-rays won.
    • X-Box 360 gaming systems are HD-DVD compatible, but an extra drive is required.
  • DVDs can be played in any of the above mentioned players.

Listings in our database will indicate if a movie is a Blu-ray or HD-DVD in the title.

If you receive a movie that is not compatible with your player:

  • Check the title in the transaction. If the title accurately indicates the movie's disc type, you must mark it 'Received' without a problem. You are welcome to repost the movie on your Tower.
  • If the title in the transaction does not match the movie title (ex. the transaction says "300" and you received "300 [Blu-ray]"), you should mark it 'Received, but a Problem' in your account. Then, indicate that it was the 'Wrong DVD'. You will then be returned to your original position on the Wish List.
