Some time during the last half of the previous century I was referred to by the Daily Disappointment as a "Man of Consequence in the Community", and I had a public profile that had much more gravitas than the one I have now: That of a retired & self-destitute writer whose genre tends to be two-page pieces of (what is supposed to be) humorous and incisive observations of other people and the quirky things they do without even being aware of them.

Most of these pieces of fluff have been written on-spec' but nearly half have been printed in magazines with national circulations. While at the same time I was so ignorant of computer-related matters that I'd have to take summer school classes at The Stupid School just to work myself up to the rank of Computer Illiterate.

I graduated with honors with a Bachelors Degree in Political Science, followed two years later by a Master in Public Administration sheepskin and 13 years as the Senior Assistant City Manager in a university community that grew in population from 20,679 in the mid-60s to 90,000+ at present.

For several of the university classes my daughter took under the rubric of American History, I studied the same course material--but under the heading of Current Events.

Until the first digit of the year became a 2 instead of a 1, my favorite hobbies fell under the penumbra of growing vegetables in raised beds filled with Rodale-approved municipal compost; and making custom-made contemporary furniture and cabinetry.

Now, however, due to osteoarthritis in both knees and generalized peripheral neuropathy of unknown etiology I seldom engage in projects that require movement.

I was raised to show respect of my elders, but it is becoming increasing difficult for me to find one.
