Thomas had to say...
I really like the older movies from the 1930s-1960s. These movies seem to have better plots and more character development (as well as much better acting) than most movies since then.

For example, my favorite war movies are "The Best Years of Our Lives," "A Walk in the Sun" and "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit."

The first takes place after World War II and the third only shows flashbacks of war. Yet the character development is outstanding.

The second takes place during the invasion of Italy. While there is some action throughout, almost all the film time is spent developing the character of the men in an average infantry platoon.

All three are outstanding!
