I love the Punisher. It's one of the only Marvel movies I like. I love the cleverness to it and I've always thought John Travolta played bad guys better than good.

For some reason, Hollywood has had a hard time translating "Punisher" from comic book hero to a screen icon. This version was slightly more faithful to the Punisher comic character than the 1989 film starring Dolph Lundgren, but in the end it's still a "Punisher" flick in name only. Setting all of the action in sunny Florida (?) was not a great idea, as Frank Castle is a New Yorker and has always been an urban jungle kind of guy. The unnecessary comedic touches involving Frank's doofus neighbors trying to be nice to him and get to know him was irritating too.

On the other hand, when they blow sh*t up in this movie, they blow A LOT OF SH*T UP and John Travolta has a nice turn as the villain.

They didn't finally get the character "right" on film till "Punisher: War Zone" as far as I'm concerned.

Thomas Jane perfectly captures the look and feel of Frank Castle. This is the Punisher. The origin sequence goes beyond the comic book and is very very effective. Perfectly explains why the Punisher is like he is. The only mistake was location (would have worked better in New York).

mediocre movie - husband enjoyed, rather predictable - huge John Travolta fan, so gave it a shot

Movie Reviews

It's not the quality of the movie, but the blu-ray

"I am a fan of "The Punisher" and this is my favorite in the three versions that have been done. But I am not going to write a review on the movie, but on this Blu-Ray. First and foremost; there are no special features on here....? WTF? It is blu-ray and your not going to add some special features? Every time you load the disc it displays this set-up of how to navigate the settings. Skipping through that and on to the next. I don't believe that they perfected the quality (or the transfer) at this point, because some of the scenes are way too grainy. In fact when I first saw blu-ray, a lot of the movies looked like this and I was turned off, because I didn't think it looked good. Now Sin City is a great example of how great a blu-ray can look and there are a ton of special features. If you own the extended cut of "The Punisher"on DVD don't bother buying this one."
