The Ricci and Timberlake character themes completely surprised me -- but I really enjoyed this movie! I thought I had picked up a grade "B" DVD from the local bargain bin and was not expecting much. Christina Ricci and Justin Timberlake had thought-provoking, intense, uncomfortable-for-me-to-watch-character-issues; however, they did not spend a long time together on the screen. The crux of this movie was with the Christina Ricci and Samuel Jackson interaction. His facilitation prods this movie forward and the three characters evolve. Samuel Jackson's personal problems were easier for me to guess at and watch. It was an emotional challenge for me to sit still and watch these actors do good work but I was rewarded with a sappy, happy ending and pretty good music in spots. Some of the guitar playing is performed by Samuel L. Jackson. The added features of this DVD were a nice touch: comments of the film maker; background to the music selections; why people were chosen to be the actors.

First time to watch this. Funny like "Pink Panther" is funny. Loved where she is trying to sleep on satin sheets. The part where the characters are exiting rooms going into the hallway and just missing each other reminds me of those very well-done movies of the 1930s and 1940s.

Too short! 21 songs is not enough -- it left me wanting more music from all her guests. I really enjoyed this DVD. The concert stage set-up seems too tidy and pristine for these performers -- needs to be smoky, dim, and rowdy.

For musical lovers. Lots & lots of 1930's production numbers -- tap dancing, dancing, singing. Witty dialog for the short and sweet stories. Uncanny camera shots (including those kaleidoscope-type) throughout. Definitely "escapism" movies. All this may be in black & white but it is still great to watch.

Includes a fascinating separate disc which explores the significance of Busby Berkeley with many examples of his musical numbers and their staging. Some pretty strange and odd extras on each disc; These give the viewer a snapshot of the 1930's (movie-wise).

Love the clothing on the characters and costumes on stage. Hardly any chorus dancers have big bosoms and long legs!! Also noticed that the individual singers are not as on key as singers nowadays. Each movie has a large number of people in the musical numbers - although there are early graphics effects multiplying their images, I think. I'm not sure if there was any censure code in effect at the time.

This was my first chance to see Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, Joan Blondell, Zasu Pitts.

The Con Artists (1997)

Release Year: 1997

Kind of a 3-Stooges-type of comedy. I kept looking to see how much time was left to watch, because the movie drags; however, I did want to see how it ended. Poor audio and visual.

The main con artists are actors Andriano Celentano and Anthony Quinn. Capucine was head of a gang opposing and using the con artists. However, her gang got conned. Capucine's charcter was formerly involved with the character played by Anthony Quinn.

Parts of the movie are very absorbing. All the acting is conventional. I don't think I wasted my time watching this, but it is not a keeper.

How is that I can understand how all the pieces of the picture fit together yet come away with a feeling that the movie did not put them together correctly?

Fast-paced, touching without being maudlin, with more action than I thought there would be. Sure, there is "conspiracy-theory" in the plot, but the actors make it plausible. The story leaves viewers to wonder if perhaps they shouldn't read more into a main-stream media story and try to politically connect A to C through B.

Tremendous amount of music here; really like that. I am NOT an Elton John fanatic and previously thought his songs were pretty much alike, but the 2nd listen-thru of these DVDs have given me great enjoyment and an appreciation of his talent and those who write the songs. Liked the setting of the concert and shots of the audience, but something about the camera work bugs me still - I yearn to see more of his keyboard work on camera and more time spent on shots of his backup musicians. What a hoot to view his early and more simply staged 70s and 80s performances.

Lots of action in this movie. It moves along quickly and unexpectedly; I was startled more than once and had some laughs. What stayed with me after this movie was finished was how one partner NEVER, NEVER doubts himself. This partner has a mind-set and his actions are consistent with it. The other partner is tugged into action before he has decided if he really wants to participate. The partners play well off each other.

Fun and fun again. Plot moves fairly quickly but not in the direction I thought. Lots of noise and blood, but not gory or scary.

It is like the twisted MAGNIFICENT 21 and RED meet BUTCH CASSIDY & THE SUNDANCE KID and POLICE ACADEMY and SNATCH (the mumbling that needs to be translated), and etc., etc., etc.

The other reviews cover many of the movie elements quite well and I agree that this is a funny, clean-comedy. Sandra Dee sparkles. I thought the introduction was too long. I was quite taken with the clothing and loved the "richness" portrayed in the fabrics and colors. The furniture is different also. The color on this DVD is quite bright, and I liked it.

From the back of the box:

"This Four Pack DVD set contains the greatest martial arts legend of all times, Bruce Lee, in two of his finest films 'The Chinese Connection" and 'Fists of Fury.' It also contains films from some of the meanest and baddest Kung Fu artists in film history: from Sonny Chiba, to Jackie Chan, to Bruce Li, to Jim Kelly and Meng Fei. These films will knock your socks off with their non-stop action. This DVD set is a must for the Kung Fu film fan."

Weeks after I first saw this movie, I am still thinking about it. How far would I go to support a cause in which I believe strongly? The movie is a murder mystery, with lots of clues I did not get. I did not want to watch it again, but I will in order to get the subtleties and puzzle pieces I missed the first time. Using blatant stereotypes, this is also a propaganda movie against the death penalty, but that theme does not distract from the wonderful acting. Remember "Dead Man Walking?"

These movies are a spoofy-spy-romp. They capture Hollywood's take on the late 1960s. Matt Helm & Lovey Kravesit vs. James Bond and Miss Moneypenny. Matt is non-serious competition and double entendre abound. The women in these movies wear: dresses 8" above the knees; colorful go-go boots; eye shadow that matches the dress and sometimes eyeliner that covers the whole eyelid; lots of long hair and see-through nightgowns. Polyester adorns the men. Spy gizmos and gadgets, vinyl records, cigarettes, and a drink in the hand. Very retro. Matt Helm drove a station wagon with wood on the doors in one movie. Ann-Margaret was a hoot! No choreography for her - dancing consisted of jogging in place or jumping up and down before her dress is ripped off and tossed at a Frank Sinatra poster and explodes. Lots and lots of shooting, dead bodies, blown up rooms, but no blood and sometimes no holes! The camera shots take a really, really long time whenever the characters travel. I fast-forward through these, but others might like to see how parts of the world looked in the 60s.

This is a very, very funny and fast moving version of Tom Sawyer getting his friends to whitewash the fence for him. I like that the physical perspective is always from the animals viewpoint. The extras on the DVD are great, too.

Royal Wedding: Loved Astaire dancing with a hat rack in the practice room -- Laughed out loud during the shipboard dance on a stormy sea. Second Chorus not so cute - but I liked that Artie Shaw wanted Paulette Goddard for a band manager and not either of Astaire or Meredith for his Band! Am keeping the movies on my shelf because I like Astaire, but don't think the Inspired Corporation had a very good master movie from which to make this DVD as it's grainy and there are really odd colors on the people in Royal Wedding.

Terrific movie about a regular mom in New York City with normal household duties and play dates at the park, etc., who has an overactive imagination. I mean: a sorta interlude with a dancing Castro..telling her mom what she really feels...having her boobs grow while at a cocktail party...a trek to Africa to locate the tribe that has found the secret to painless childbirth...yet always waking up to her reality. Touching & funny & still current.
