DVD Synopsis

One of the best-loved films from the idiosyncratic British film studio Ealing Pictures gets an update from the equally idiosyncratic filmmaking team of Joel and Ethan Coen in this offbeat comedy. Marva Munson (Irma P. Hall) is a spry, elderly woman who attends church regularly, doesn't care for loud noises or harsh language, and is looking for a tenant for the spare room in her house. Enter Goldthwait Higginson Dorr (Tom Hanks), a silver-tongued college professor who moves in and gains Munson's permission to use the basement for rehearsals with his "medieval music ensemble." What Munson doesn't know is that Dorr's latest project is not academic, but criminal. Dorr is masterminding the robbery of a riverboat casino, and the fellow musicians in his ensemble are actually the crew he's assembled to pull off the job: foul-mouthed "inside man" Gawain (Marlon Wayans), clumsy demolitions expert Pancake (J.K. Simmons), quiet strong-arm man Lump (Ryan Hurst), and logistical expert The General (Tzi Ma). Despite the best efforts of Dorr and his cohorts (which aren't very impressive), Munson finds out about their scheme, and when she refuses to accept a share of the take in exchange for her silence, Dorr decides the best solution is to silence her permanently. The gospel tunes which grace the soundtrack to The Ladykillers were coordinated by T-Bone Burnett, who also helped assemble the acclaimed song score for the Coen brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou?. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Editorial Review of DVD

The first film to be officially co-credited to Joel Coen and Ethan Coen as directors, The Ladykillers debuts on DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. A French soundtrack has also been recorded. French and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a reel consisting of co-star Irma P. Hall slapping around Marlon Wayans, a pair of featurettes about the gospel music heard in the film, and a script reader that allows those with a DVD-ROM drive to read the script -- and allow the viewer to see any scene in the film by clicking on the corresponding line in the script. This modest box-office hit has been given a modest, effective DVD release by Disney. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Anyone who has seen the original British film with Alec Guiness, Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom should avoid this dreadful remake like the plague. The setting has been moved from England to Mississippi, where the criminals plot in the basement of a clueless widowed landlady to burglarize a casino after hours. Unfortunately, the script is awful, obscenities are thrown around without adding anything to the plot, while the acting is more excessive caricature than anything else. My wife walked out 15 minutes into this film in the theater and by the time it was over, I wished I had joined her. This waste of celluloid deserves every brickbat hurled its way. Don't waste your time, money or trade credits.

OMG this is a GREAT movie! It is very well written, swings back and forth between a little suspense and subtle to laugh-out-loud comedy. The actress who plays the landylady totally captures the southern eccentric. I could watch it again (and might before I send it LOL!)

Fans of Hanks will agree that he does very well in The Ladykillers. However, the "language" was not to my personal liking.
