""Albert Schweitzer: Called to Africa"

"A Reverence for Life"

Amos Lassen

Dr. Albert Schweitzer was one of the great humanitarians of the 20th century. He received the Nobel Prize for his work with healing the sick and injured in Africa and this film is a docu-drama that tells his story. Not only was Schweitzer a doctor but he was also a pastor, a philosopher and a musician and he led a life in which he was respected for all he did but he paid a heavy price--his wife and daughter did not go with him and remained in Europe as he cared for those in Africa. The film was actually shot in West Africa at the hospital he founded and which still operates today. It includes interviews with family members and scholars, biographers and theologians. Here is a film that is powerful as it brings to life a man who did so much for the good of the world.

Very interesting and controversial film

"Dr. Schweitzer was certainly a very noble and extraordinary person. As a professional, he has completely dedicated his life to helping others. However, in many ways he sacrificed his family (an ill wife and a young daughter) for the well-being of the world.

Doblmeier's film successfully highlights this controversy of Dr. Schweitzer's legacy. I strongly recommend it, especially to those who try to find out the right balance between their professional ambitions and family needs."
