The beginning of the movie plotline was confusing and did not make sense so it had a rough start bringing my rating down. Once the story got going, the CGI was out of this world and the plotline starting making more sense. Parts of movie had the feel of Alien and Transcendence movies. A must for Sci-Fi horror fans!

Annihilation was highly rated by critics and yet one of 2018's biggest box office bombs. Audiences rated it much lower. Paramount's execs were worried the film was too intellectual and complicated, and they may have been right. This film was adapted and directed by Alex Garland, on the heels of a long film history with Danny Boyle, also known for off-the-wall approaches to storytelling. Annihilation, although a Scifi vehicle, tackles existential memes like depression, grief, and the human susceptibility for self-destruction. And this midst a diaphanous, distorted dream-like perception filter, stunning visuals, and an experimental electronic sound track. There are similarities here to Tarkovsky's "Stalker", Lovecraft's 1927 short story "The Colour Out of Space", Crichton's "Andromeda Strain", and a smattering of Swamp Thing.

Ground zero appears to have been hit by an encroaching alien cancer, mirroring the unit leader's (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh) terminal struggles. There are also some nightmare scenes here which may slip under your skin and curl your toes. I quite enjoyed this. You'll be noticing more things with repeated viewings. Movies which take risks, challenge the viewer, and leave one pondering have always been my cup of tea.
