Movie Reviews

Seasons 4 & 5 stories, new to DVD!
Paul J. Mular | San Carlos, CA USA | 01/07/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"**Updated 6/3/10**

If you have been collecting the seasonal sets 1, 2, 3 and the upcoming 4 like me, then you will want to get this set also. It contains a 12 chapter story from season 5.

First a quick word about these later seasons:
SEASON 4 - only 19 new half hour shows were produced. The rest of the season was filled out with re-runs.
SEASON 5 - NO new half hour shows were produced. BUT 66 new 3.5 minute Rocky & Bullwinkle segments were produced to be inserted into older shows, replacing the older Rocky & Bullwinkle segments. Thus 33 half hour shows were created for the 5th season re-using the secondary cartoons from previous seasons.

The box art shown by Amazon must be a preliminary version. It states "16 Fumbled Plays", when actually there are 28 episodes. My box cover states "28 Fumbled Plays".

Each of the three stories starts out with one opening title section from seasons 1 or 2 as indicated, a brief Rocky & Bullwinkle intro. And then the story chapters, uncut but with out the individual intros. At the end of each completed story is a set of end credits based on the second season credits, but cpoyrighted 1997.

The three stories:
WOSSAMOTTA U (spelled Wossamatta U on the inside cover) - 12 chapters from season 5, opening title & closing credits are from season 2. This is one of the story lines I always remembered since watching R&B as a kid. Football scouts mistake Rocky's flying ability as Bullwinkle's throwing ability, so they enroll the moose in college. Previously available in edited form on VHS volume 8 & Laserdisc volume 4. They are presented uncut here with the original cliffhangers & re-caps.

THE TREASURE OF MONTE ZOOM - 8 chapters from season 4, opening title & closing credits are from season 1. Rocky, Bullwinkle, Boris & Natasha hunt for a lost treasure sunk in a lake by race-car driver Monte Zoom. THIS WILL BE ON THE SOON TO BE RELEASED SEASON 4 DVD SET.

GOOF GAS ATTACK - 8 chapters from season 4, opening title & closing credits are from season 1. THIS WILL BE ON THE SOON TO BE RELEASED SEASON 4 DVD SET.

Order season 4 here:
Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends: Season 4 (2pc)

Bonus Material:
Bullwinkle Moose hand puppet end tags & sponsorship intros.

Overall the picture is not restored, but the colors are generally bright.
I got the yearning for Bullwinkle to pull a rabbit out of the hat, but that does not happen here. This is just straight story lines."
I really didn't want to buy this.

"When is Classic Media just going to release a proper season four DVD set? That is what I would like, instead I have to buy this. The episodes are great, and none of them are one the first three season sets, but I like the interludes of Fractured Fairy Tales, Aesop and Son, and Peabody and Sherman. Also, the 'exploding lightbulbs' end credits would be nice too. It has a much jazzier tone to it."
