Blood Ranch is another in a long line of films in the same vein as the Hills Have Eyes. A group of young people are travelling in the desert and end up trapped in the web of a psychopath and his gruesome gang who revel in raping and torturing anyone that falls into their area of influence. Blah, blah...same old, same old. It actually seems promising in the middle of the movie. The madman Spider seems like his story might be interesting, as well as that of his moral degenerate lackies. The only problem is that nothing comes of this. He just randomly tortures people with no apparent reasoning. It appears that the filmmaker got all of his cues from House of a Thousand Corpses. In other words, it seems like if things were properly fleshed out, there might be a good story there. But there's not. The tone tends to change in a bad way, throughout, as well. There are several honestly creepy scenes, along the lines of The Hills Have Eyes, where you cringe seeing the antics of these pscyhos. But then it shifts to more of a jokey feel like in Bloodsucking Freaks. This leaves you off balance, but not in a good way. It just feels like with every scene change you're watching a completely different movie. It's got it's moments, but you either have to be a big genre fan, or just want to see some pretty girls tied up and tormented to enjoy this movie. It's definently not for everyone. I think genre fans will feel it's too tame, and everyone else will just be offended.
