An intentionally disorienting and surreal film about a WWII pilot desperate to escape the insanity and immorality of wartime Italy. The satire is quite funny in some parts, in other parts the dialogue is a bit too clever and pedantic. Probably the funniest parts involve Jon Voight's character and his MM Enterprises, seeking to profit from the war under the auspices of being beneficial for everyone. It's possible that those with military experience will relate to this film better than those without, so it probably doesn't have the wide appeal of a blockbuster. That being said, the cast and cultural impact of the movie certainly ranks with blockbusters.
