No less than 24 hours after manic, standing-room-only crowds gave local fire marshals coronaries at local premiere events for the Magic Bullet/Fredericksburg Skateboards 2005 DVD release, independent filmmaker and skate... more » shop owner Mark Eyestone set forth with the task of documenting an entirely new cast of skaters hailing from his hometown hotbed of Fredericksburg, Virginia. In what seemed like an overnight sensation, the 2005 DVD (that the young filmmaker meticulously compiled and assembled at his home in Virginia) ripped through three subsequent pressings and quickly shot from local shop video status to internationally-distributed acclaim amongst both skateboarding and music communities alike. Eyestone remained unfazed and focused in the face of notoriety and skaters of the world suddenly wanting to be his MySpace friend, opting to do nothing but obsess over what was yet to be made over the next year and a half of his life.
"City By The Battlefield" is concrete evidence that, in the face of constant change and evolution, skateboarding itself is immortal; only growing stronger as its fossils are shed. Where trends and transients go to die lies a youthful fountain of new ideas and new talent, exploding with more grace and ability than their predecessors could have dreamed of. While other sports evolve slowly over time and past glory upholds, skateboarding is reinvented daily. Sure, you can wager that you deserve respect because you kickflipped a pyramid hip way back when you were sixteen. But go eat your hat... a fourteen year old just did that to flat over the whole freaking thing while warming up. Switch...
So while local veteran institutions like Zac Childers, Jed Davis, and Eyestone himself return to DVD and pick up where they left off, "City By The Battlefield" marks the rise of a triumphant new generation in Fredericksburg skateboarding. Whether it's the the all-american looks and high-flying execution of Matt Clarkson, the death-defying eccentricities of 15-year old phenom Ryan Shamblin, or the precision and ragamuffin stylings of Justin Reiff, the latest crop of debut parts already raises the bar for local generations to come. Capping the video with an inspiring tale of what-goes-down-must-come-up, Brandon Smithson emerges from the surgical reconstruction of his ankle (incurred while filming the last DVD) to put down one of the heaviest and most unrelenting comeback parts ever imagined possible.
Featuring the music of the Magic Bullet roster and friends alike (ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS, THIS WILL DESTROY YOU, SPARROWS SWARM AND SING, DOOMRIDERS, et al), "City By The Battlefield" is an essential document in true independent skateboarding spirit.« less
