Death Rage has the same problem as the old school action movies where they rely too much on the appearance of the lead character to convince the viewer he is "tough" - meanwhile, he doesn't often demonstrate that he has the skills to pay the bills. Overall, Brynner is a milquetoast hitman who seemed unprepared for the revenge mission he undertakes in Italy. Some decent car chases and urban scenery in the Old World, but poor editing makes the film difficult to understand at times. Nothing really new here - notable for being Brynner's last film before he retired from Hollywood and went to stage for good.
Bloodtide has an interesting plot, but the pacing for the first hour is slow. Lots of focus on Jones' character being drunk and by himself doesn't really assist the story. Seems a shame that we didn't get more film time with Jones and Ferrer. With a bigger budget, tighter script, and the same cast, this movie could have been a minor hit. Probably wanted to channel the Wicker Man meets Jaws in terms of suspense and scares, but it doesn't really hit the mark. Martin Kove might be remembered for Karate Kid - he does okay in this one.
Rating is for decent acting by James Earl Jones and Yul Brynner despite low budgets and choppy film quality.
