Movie Reviews

The VOID
Eric J. Reiter | Milwaukee, WI | 09/02/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Flaming Lips truly care about presenting a quality product to their fans (see Brad Beesley's fabulous "Fearless Freaks" DVD documentary for further proof!), and this DVD is no exception. Presented are the Lips' video output for the Warner Brothers record label (sorry, completists, no "Unconsiously Screamin'"), which have apparently come from fresh video or film transfers, with 100% remastered audio - available in stereo 2.0 or glorious (THUNDERING) 5.1. This compilation is perfect for the starting Flaming Lips fan, who would otherwise never have an opportunity to see the Clouds Taste Metallic gem "Bad Days," and fills in certain "voids" for the completist, with the inclusion of both versions of "Do You Realize??," and "Phoebe Battles the Pink Robots."
The DVD is no-frills - don't buy it if you think it's loaded with bonus features and making-of documentaries. This compilation is about the Flaming Lips music video output. The menus are beautiful, with a Zaireeka track in the background of the main menu (which pops up immediately after putting the DVD in - NO PREVIEWS or LOGOS! THANK YOU, WARNER BROTHERS!), and assorted "Transmissions from the Sattelite Heart" & "Yoshimi" tracks under the other menus. It's a joy to have fallen asleep during some of the last videos to wake up to these menus. Pleasing to the eye AND ear!
Included is a BRAND NEW track / video "Mr. Ambulance Driver," which is a cut from the new album AT WAR WITH THE MYSTICS. A free AT WAR... sticker is included in the package, along with a track listing, which is broken down track by track by head lip (and director on most videos) Wayne Coyne. Coyne's comments are always creative, and it gives some insight about the videos and their "plot," when one is present. While it may seem silly, the track from the Spongebob Squarepants movie "Spongebob and Patrick Confront the Psychic Wall" is present, and it is one of the highlights of the entire DVD! Thrill to the lips dressed as various food items, falling about a giant prop mouth, slowly mastecating our heros amongst false saliva!
What more needs to be said? Amazon.com's price is a STEAL, so what are you waiting for? Turn it on and all the way up, people."
A Great Compliment to The Fearless Freaks!

"I wrote a review a good time back of The Fearless Freaks to prematurely. I tried to go back and rewrite it, but Amazon only allows one review per item. Anyway, I give The Fearless Freaks 5 Stars after watching it a half dozen times. It slowly grew on me with each viewing.

Void compliments The Fearless Freaks and is outstanding on it's own merits. I had never seen any music videos by these guys. Note: I'm fairly new to the Lips. This video collection hits on my favorite albums: Transmissions, Clouds, Bulletin, Yoshimi. With the video ending with the UK version of "Do you realize", I just about squirted a few. It's like when one of your favorite movie ends with a killer song that just hits you in the gut! I love that song anyway! Thanks You Guys!"
