Movie Reviews

Excellent movie of man vs. beast!

"This movie has everything to make it the great movie that it is. First the 2 main characters. Val Kilmer is excellent as the bold yet reluctant John Paterson and Michael Douglas is equally excellent as the fearless lion hunter Remington. Tom Wilkinson also puts in an excellent performance as the heartless railroad industrialist Beaumont, a young Emily Mortimer does a good job playing the wife of Paterson, and the unheralded John Kani steals the show as Sam The Chief Railroad Supervisor. Kani also narrates the movie, which he also does quite well. This movie not only has great performances but it also has a great story, perfect pacing, a very good musical score, and great cinematography. It also keeps you on the edge of your seat and it's full of suspense. It's got more suspense than all of those cheesy teen psycho slasher movies such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. My advice to all of you is pass on those types of movies to check out some real suspense in this movie. This movie is more suspenseful and so much more sophisticated than all those teen slasher psycho flicks, which are all poorly crafted attempts at film making. Check out The Ghost And The Darkness. You will not be disappointed!"
Good adventure movie & cast, based on a true story

"Interesting movie loosely based on a true story "The Maneaters of
Tsavo"author Colonel Patterson. This movie has a beautiful soundtrack
breathtaking african scenery and Val Kilmer's role as Colonel Patterson
is one of his best.

Patterson was sent to build a railroad in Tsavo, and his love
of Africa was incentive to accept the assignment.

The railroad building stalled soon due to maneating lions attacking
at will and the workers refused to work blaming Patterson for the
attacks. Patterson killed one lion and work began again.

Two more evil vicious lions appear, attacking frequently
without fear, killing everyone in their Path.

After many attempts to kill the two maneaters
Scraggly big game hunter Remington(Michael Douglas)
is hired and is accompanied by fierce Maasai warriors. Much to everyone's
frustration even Remington and the Maasai fail, when Patterson's rifle
fails to fire at one of the lions, the warriors said "the lions could
could not be killed they are THe ghost and THe darkness, demons in
the form of lions" ,the Maasai abandoned the hunt & the workers
scatter. Patterson,Remington and Samuel are left alone
to battle the lions.
Some scenes in the movie are intense..not for kids.

Since this movie was inspired by a true story I bought
the book too.

A bit of trivia, this movie is similar to the 1952 B movie Bwana Devil
with Robert Stack..
