The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017) is an hilarious action movie where Samuel L. Jackson, as Darius Kincaid, revels in his freedom to say pretty much whatever he wishes (and you know what that is). And his perfect foil is the anal-retentive Ryan Reynolds as the proprietor of a former triple-A protection agency, Michael Bryce. Throw in Gary Oldman as Vladislav Dukhovich the sadistic Eastern European dictator with a sordid history, and you have a great cast. But, hang onto your hats; although Oldman isn’t really used to his full potential, Kincaid’s wife Sonia, played by the inimitable Salma Hayek, is.

One additional comment. There is lots of banter between two, and apparently much was
ad-libbed. Sometimes one couldn’t be real sure the two protagonists still liked each other.

Just forget the contrived plot and just enjoy a very well done action-comedy. But don’t stop with the movie. The commentary on the Blu-ray by the director is almost as good as the movie. Normally commentaries by one person are a bit stilted, but Patrick Hughes pulls this one off perfectly. One could have wished for subtitles for his nearly two hour continuous monolog in his brogish enjoyment of his own creation. Come on, at one time as he is laughing at something in the movie he asks if it is okay to laugh at his own movie. Give him a break. He starts out saying that he’ll take a drink of beer every time someone says "motherfucker." Well, I think he lied. He never could have finished the commentary if he had.

Don’t miss this one!

This had it all and Samuel Jackson was at his best with some really funny lines. A must watch for the comedy action thriller fan but be warned that the violence and blood is over the top for the weak at heart! I would have given this a 5/5 but the last part of the movie slowed down.
