Two things: It's a shame this was overlooked since it was released after Thelma & Louise--even though they are very different stories. The other thing is it's now available only as an MOD. If you can find the DVD, don't pass this one up!
Darly (Christine Lahti) and Marianne (Meg Tilly) are near opposite characters although both have a past they are hoping to leave behind in Normal, WY. Darly is a hardcore waitress that has a pessimistic view on life, and Marianne is one of those eternally hopefuls despite what life has thrown her way. Marianne leaves her abusive husband but with no life skills or job skills to speak of she waits at a bus stop. Darly learns that her ex has died leaving her a homestead in Alaska, and walks out on her job. Her plan is to go to AK and runs across Marianne sleeping on a bench, and offers to drive her to Portland, OR. Along the way, a few wrenches are thrown in their path, but they carry on meeting new people and changing the course of their path. Eventually, they do become friends. It is a good storyline with excellent acting on the part of both leads. I would highly recommend this film that is among my keepers.
