Movie Reviews

Great widescreen print of HERC. VS. MOON MEN
John Black | REDMOND, WA United States | 05/27/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"My comments pertain to previously released DVDs of these films, because this set is a rebundling of previously issued product. First of all, Image has used the excellent, rare widescreen (2:35-1) print of HERCULES AGAINST THE MOON MEN, with superior color. Previous VHS and DVD releases of it were full-frame and faded color. Retromedia's GIANT OF MARATHON is regarded by Steve Reeves fans as one of his very best pictures, and this DVD is the first properly letterboxed (2:35-1) transfer of MARATHON in English. The editorial description above doesn't list this, but another widescreen Reeves film, WAR OF THE TROJANS (aka THE AVENGER), is reportedly included here as well. Retromedia's tranfer of TROJANS is also the first full widescreen version of this film to appear on American home video. The print isn't as good looking as the MOON MEN and MARATHON transfers found in this set, but it is still great to have the film in scope. GOLIATH AND THE SINS OF BABYLON is one of Mark Forest's better films. I haven't seen COLOSSUS, but I don't think it is one of the better genre films. All in all, this box set of reissued discs is a very good collection of primo widescreen tranfers of some popular sword and sandal pictures, and at a bargain price for five titles."
