Movie Reviews

Phil keaggy - philly live

"Words cannot really describe this DVD. Phil Keaggy has no match in style and diversity. This live concert video shows him at his absolute best. And the close up shots of his amazing guitar stylings will make you wonder what kind of magic he is performing...if you don't get goosebumps, something is wrong with you. Phil layers in background licks, percusion (by tapping on the guitar), and adds his own background vocals, without ever hesitating...it is seemless!

The interview with Phil and friends of his really add a lot to this video. But his talent as a musician, vocalist, and songwriter overwhelmes everything else.

If you are a guitar player, you might have to take anti-depressants after watching Phil. But please watch, you won't be sorry!

Almost Like Seeing Phil Live...But Not Quite

"Recorded not long after the 2001 terrorist attacks, Phil Keaggy's show in Philadelphia is a wonderful performance by the guitar virtuoso. The show is entirely acoustic in nature played in fron of what looks to be a smallish church audience. The play list samples material from Phil's earlier works as well as some things from the Crimson and Blue and True Believer albums. I think my favorite number is "Shapes of Green" which showcases Keaggy's melodic and technical mastery in equal measures.

Captured nicely on several of the tracks is Keaggy's amazing ability to improvise around his own material and his ability to use looping to create a unique sonic environment. The ancillary materials are good with some electric moments captured there including a beautiful rendition of "Nothing but the Blood."

My biggest complaints with the album is a lack of continuity in the performance where a couple of songs are obviously left out and much of Phil's banter with the crowd is lost. Having seen Phil in concert, I missed seeing that interplay. Additionally, I would like to have seen one or two more additional instrumental selections but that's most likely a personal preference and some of that is captured in the ancillaries.

All in all, this is an excellent DVD and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys seeing and hearing excellent music performed. It's not as good as seeing Phil live but it's wonderful nevertheless."
Great to finally WATCH Phil Keaggy's music!

"I've been a fan of Phil Keaggy for several years now and have never had the chance to see him live, so I really enjoyed this DVD. Phil Keaggy is an amazing guitarist, and a great song writer and it really shows in this performance. I only wish he had included some songs from his self titled album that had come out several months before this performance took place (by far my favorite album). This is just a preferance of mine so it doesn't take away from the fact that this is a great DVD well deserving of 5 stars! Any guitarist will appreciate the live SOLO performance Phil gives! I might add that the camera work and sound on the DVD are of the highest quality. I will be enjoying this DVD for quite some time!"
