Movie Reviews

Pillar of Fire: a treasure of a documentary
Maxine A. Hartley | Carneys Point, NJ & Crystal Beach, ON | 03/17/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the 7-hour English language (done in England) documentary edited in 2005 from the documentary in Hebrew which appeared on Israeli television in 1986.Essentially, the 3 DVD set is the story of the founding of Israel and takes the viewer through the early, 19th century Jewish communities in what was Palestine, through the Herzl years and up to 1948 when Israel was officially established.

There is much history to get through here, including the British Mandate in Palestine, the Balfour Declaration, the Herzl years (the founder of Zionism), the Arab national awakening, 2 world wars, the role played by the U.S. and other nations in the U.N. It is done with very early film footage which is absolutely a keeper historically. For instance, the viewer hears Einstein speak. This is the first time I have heard his voice and I was surprised at his thick accent and high, reedy tone.

There is also rare, brief footage showing Kaiser Wilhelm 11 and rare footage of the early Jewish settlement in 'Palestine.'

If you are interested in the development of Israel, Pillar of Fire is an irreplacable gem of information. If you are lukewarm on Israel but keen on late 19th Century and 20th Century history, politics or wars, this is an irreplacable gem of information with valuable, insightul early footage.

I love Pillar of Fire so much that I keep watching it over and over and most importantly, will not loan it to anyone. It is pricey but if they're that interested, let them get their own.:-))"
A "Must See" for old and young.

"Many people are unaware of the miraculous series of events that led to the establishment of the state of Israel. Although a somewhat dated production, this DVD set is essential viewing for those who wish to better appreciate the miracle which was detailed in prophecy thousands of years ago. Read Ezekiel 37!"
