Movie Reviews

The extras are worth the price of admission...

"My only complaint about this CBC-TV special package is that too many of the songs performed during the program are not complete versions of the songs. Granted, it was only an hour-long special, but the full songs would have been preferred over some of the condensed versions that appear here. The alternative would have been to travel into Montreal on a Tuesday night to see whqat was already a sold-out show that I didn't find out about soon enough to get tickets for (unrestricted by the timing of a television special, I'm assuming we would have gotten the full songs). The good news is the extra stuff that didn't air on the show is very much worth the cost of this package: their version of Marvin gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me", the updated "American Woman" (which they so kindly included on their "Jukebox" CD) and a few other songs that made me wish the show had been a 90-minute special (or even two hours). These guys have earned a lot more than this special gave us in just one hour...but the extras are a very sweet bonus that make up for most of that."
This show is a gem~

"I confess to being a diehard Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman fan, but this is such a great DVD. Both of these guys look wonderful - and the music is nostalgic and new at the same time. Their comraderie and genuine fondness for each other makes this performance even more special - thank the music gods for keeping these two incredible talents working together after all this time. We are so lucky to be here for it."
Bachman & Cummings Better Than Ever!

"First Time Around was an absolute treat, with Randy & Burton reminising, and showing such undeniable respect for each other while they fondly spoke of past influences and experiences tied to their early '60's songwriting episodes and touring adventures. The music was excellent and laced with harmonies so relevent to the era, and a visual delight. The boys have not lost their touch, and the band was incredibly on the mark. This DVD will knock your socks off and I only hope that Messrs. Bachman / Cummings consider giving us fans another taste of their talent in a more extended version in the near future. Don't Pass this one by!"
No disappointments here!

"I'd be willing to bet it's "bestcdhead"'s ears that are shot....cause it certainly ain't Burton Cumming's voice! I've sat with numerous people and watched this DVD and the unanimous and enthusiastic first comment is always "Burton's voice is as fantastic as ever!" In fact, I saw them live at Hamilton Place this year and I have never been so entertained by anything in my life! Of all the live theatre, musicals and concerts I have been to....nothing compared to it. The audience rocked and hooted through essentially the same set as is on this DVD, with some additional songs included, and I've never seen a happier crowd exit a show at concert's end. It's a much smaller and more intimate gathering of people on this DVD but there is still fantastic singing and playing and a most appreciative audience throughout. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone."
