Mr. Booker shows READ a mirror that was just installed at the newsstand so that people coming by can see a friendly face. He calls it the "face place." XTRA has some news to share. READ opens the paper to find a story about a girl who loves to race. After a while, READ flies off to the Reading Room and joins a group of children who have gathered to hear some books read: "Dave Does Not Like", "The Annual Sea Race" and "King Bidgoood in the Bathtub". READ soon heads home. Along the way, he encounters signs "in the real world" which he is able to read, for example, "parking place", "skate shop", and "shave". Combining animation, puppetry, storytelling, songs and adventures, these programs captivate young viewers and encourage the love of reading. A Race in Space features the letter "V" and includes the theme of "cleanliness". Kids will learn to recognize the letters "F", "L", "PL", "SP", "R", "D", "SK", "G", "W" and "C" and more plus the sounds associated with them, as well as identify and use the "ace" and "ate" "ave" sound-spelling patterns; use these patterns to unlock words and participate in written language; and appreciate that there are many words made up of these patterns, i.e., "face", "place", "race", "late", "skate", "cave" and more!
