This coming of age film is set against the backdrop of the Straight Edge punk movement as popularized by the band Minor Threat during the 80s. Economically written, the plot explores complex relationships of non-traditional families and a rarely referenced musical movement wherein the children rebelled against post-hippie parents by eschewing drugs and sex. The soundtrack is appropriate for the era and Hawke is particularly convincing in his role - fans of post-punk, Bohemian NYC, and 80s-era history will find the movie entertaining and compelling.
